UMI Welcomes New Cohort with a Call for Excellence

KAMPALA — On Friday, 10th July 2026, the Uganda Management Institute (UMI) officially welcomed its new cohort of postgraduate participants for the 2026/2027 academic year. The orientation event, which drew participants from various professional sectors across the region, highlighted UMI’s enduring commitment to grooming transformative leaders through rigorous, world-class management training.

The orientation was moderated by the Deputy Institute Registrar, Mrs. Ritah Walala, who congratulated the incoming cohort on gaining admission into the region’s premier management development institution. “By choosing UMI, you have joined an institution of excellence. We assure you that by the time you complete your journey here, you will be fully empowered to excel, innovate, and lead in your respective fields,” Mrs. Walala remarked.

Shaping World-Class Leaders: highlights from the Director General’s Statement

Addressing the incoming cohort, the Director General, Prof. James L. Nkata, congratulated the participants, noting that gaining admission into UMI is a distinct competitive advantage and a significant milestone in professional value addition.

Prof. Nkata emphasized that UMI’s unique training model relies on collaborative, experience-driven learning rather than traditional passive instruction. As seasoned professionals, participants are viewed as partners in knowledge creation.

He further explained that at UMI, participants are facilitated to learn rather than just being taught. To support this unique training model, the new cohort was strongly encouraged to fully embrace research and actively share their rich field experiences to enrich classroom discourse. Furthermore, the Director General reminded the cohort that UMI’s faculty members represent the ultimate authority in the lecture room, urging participants to fully utilize the vast expertise of their lecturers to maximize their academic investment.

A central theme of the Director General’s address was humility, discipline, and mutual respect, where he noted that to succeed at UMI, incoming professionals must adopt the identity of a “participant” and treat one another with utmost courtesy. By leveraging this professional proximity, participants were urged to remain approachable and build lasting, title-free relationships, recognizing that the networking opportunities at UMI are invaluable since the peers sitting next to them today will carry diverse leadership titles across the globe tomorrow.

While celebrating the high quality of the new intake, the Director General sent a clear, unwavering message regarding institutional standards, maintaining that “quality and qualitative participants” remains UMI’s number-one priority. To protect the value and international prestige of UMI qualifications, the Institute maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward any form of academic dishonesty.

The orientation was well-attended by the Deans of the various schools, Heads of Departments, and staff from all administrative sections, signaling a united readiness to guide the 2026/2027 cohort toward successful completion and turning them into proud global Ambassadors of UMI.
