Uganda Management Institute (UMI), through its Department of Projects and Management, officially launched the third cohort of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme on 13 August 2026. The 10-day competency-based training brings together 13 participants and focuses on integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into vocational delivery.

On behalf of the Head of the Department of Projects and Management, Dr. Rose Kwatampora, Mr. Aiden Gafabusa welcomed the participants and highlighted the training’s practical and hands-on nature. As part of the experiential learning component, participants will undertake a specialized field study at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) laboratory in Nakawa, where they will gain practical exposure to ICT applications in training.

Mr. Gafabusa emphasized that full attendance and active participation are essential to the successful completion of the programme. Participants who meet the programme requirements will be awarded certificates in Integrating ICT Delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the departmental leadership, Mr. Isaac Kalyango expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) for providing the opportunity and funding the initiative under the broader TVET framework. He highlighted the programme’s assessment approach, which utilizes UMI’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) alongside standard competency-based assessment scales. Mr. Kalyango encouraged participants to actively engage with the facilitators and make full use of the learning opportunities available to them to maximize the training’s impact and meet UMI’s institutional standards.

The Chief Guest, Assoc. Prof. Paddy Mugambe, congratulated the participants on being selected for the competitive programme. He commended the Ministry of Education and Sports for advancing TVET reforms that are designed to build a skilled workforce aligned with global standards.

Drawing on his research in systems development and related areas, Assoc. Prof. Mugambe observed that the Government of Uganda is accelerating capacity-building initiatives to address critical skills gaps and strengthen the country’s human resource base.

In his closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. Mugambe reaffirmed UMI’s mandate to build high-level management and technical capacity for both the public and private sectors. He challenged the participants to apply the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired during the training to improve their institutions and contribute to Uganda’s broader socio-economic transformation.

The launch marked the beginning of a practical learning journey aimed at strengthening participants’ ability to integrate ICT into TVET delivery and, ultimately, enhance the quality, relevance and effectiveness of vocational education and training in Uganda.
