UMI Prioritizes Staff Well-being through Health Sensitization Workshop
Health sensitization in many workplaces is often overlooked, yet it remains one of the most important investments an institution can make in its people. This, however, is not the case at the UMI. On the 11th June 2026, through its Human Resource Department, UMI organized a Health Sensitization Workshop aimed at promoting the health, safety, and well-being of staff. The workshop brought together experts from various stakeholder institutions, including the Ministry of Health, to facilitate discussions on critical health issues affecting both the workplace and society.
The workshop covered a range of topics aimed at enhancing staff welfare and preparedness. These included Mental Health and Stress Management, Work-Life Balance, HIV/AIDS Awareness, and Ebola Prevention and Preparedness. The sessions equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills to safeguard their health while contributing to a healthier and more productive work environment.
Speaking during the workshop, Dr. Kenneth from the Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of mental health, describing it as something that must be actively pursued and nurtured, much like happiness. He encouraged participants to create positive experiences, maintain supportive relationships, and adopt healthy lifestyles that contribute to emotional well-being. Addressing the issue of stress, Dr. Kenneth reminded staff that not all stress can be avoided. He encouraged them to confront what is within their control and, for what lies beyond it, to stand resilient and keep moving forward. He further highlighted the importance of adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and avoiding alcohol and substance abuse as key pillars of good mental health.
“What if the greatest protection against HIV-related stigma is not policy alone, but the kindness, understanding, and respect we extend to one another? Can a workplace truly thrive when some feel excluded because of their health status? A healthy and productive work environment begins with inclusion, compassion, and the recognition that every individual deserves dignity and equal opportunity.” The HIV/AIDS awareness session focused on prevention, workplace support, confidentiality, and non-discrimination. Participants were reminded of the importance of creating an inclusive work environment where every individual is treated with dignity and respect regardless of their HIV status.
Ebola can be a deadly disease, but it can also be effectively prevented through awareness and collective responsibility. Staff also received updates on Ebola prevention and preparedness. The session emphasized vigilance, proper hygiene practices, adherence to public health guidelines, and early reporting of suspected cases as essential measures in preventing the spread of the disease and protecting communities.
In a world where health challenges continue to evolve, knowledge remains one of our greatest tools. By bringing staff together to learn, reflect, and engage on issues of mental health, HIV/AIDS, work-life balance, and Ebola prevention, UMI has taken yet another step toward building not only a stronger workforce, but a healthier and more resilient community. After all, when people thrive, institutions flourish.
