UMI welcomes New Students with Emphasis on Excellence & Integrity

Uganda Management Institute, on the 11th and 12th of July 2025 held an orientation ceremony for new participants, officiated by the Director General (DG). The event marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the participants, who were welcomed and congratulated by the DG. During the ceremony, the DG emphasized several key points that would guide the students throughout their time at UMI. These included:
- Equality: At UMI, everyone is treated equally, and titles do not influence one’s experience emphasizing that UMI encompasses person of different statuses however, “if you want to excel in adult learning especially in UMI, forget about who you are”.
- Attendance: A minimum attendance of 75%of the contact hours is mandatory to qualify for examinations. This tracked through the signing of registrars.
- Registration: Students were encouraged to register as soon as possible to obtain their ID cards as this is a means in which they will be recognized as participants of the Institute.
- Preparedness: Investing in gadgets and smartphones was recommended to facilitate seamless interaction with lecturers.
- Research and self-study: As a postgraduate institute, UMI expects students to engage in extensive research and self-study as they should not expect notes or handouts but will rather will be required to use the references given to aid their research.
- Dress code: Students were reminded to maintain decency and professionalism, reflecting UMI’s ISO certification.
- Academic integrity: The DG emphasized that UMI has zero tolerance for academic dishonesty, which can have severe consequences. “UMI does not give diplomas or degrees but awards these” therefore, no form of academic dishonesty is acceptable.
A Culture of Excellence
The DG encouraged students to utilize the institute’s utilities and resources, and to comply with regulations to succeed saying “Today, you start your journey and you have come to study so do the work and comply with whatever regulations constitute the Institute”. By emphasizing the importance of hard work, research, and integrity, UMI sets a high standard for its students, preparing them for success in their careers.
The orientation ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the students at UMI. With its emphasis on excellence, integrity, and hard work, UMI is committed to providing a world-class education that prepares students for the challenges of the future.
