UMI, Makerere Equip 58 Prison Officers with Advanced Leadership Skills
Uganda Management Institute (UMI), in collaboration with Makerere University, graduated the 4th cohort of the Uganda Prisons Service’s “Intermediate Command and Staff” Course on November 14, 2025. A total of 58 UPS officers successfully completed the rigorous five-month training designed to strengthen professional capacity, leadership, and efficiency across the service.
The robust course covered critical areas of study that included leadership skills, project planning, resource mobilization, administrative law, accountability, safety and security, human rights, mental health, entrepreneurship skills and conflict resolution tools among other areas. The participants were drawn from various ranks across the country. The training involved field exposures and practical hands-on activities incorporating practical simulations and extensive study tours to Kiira Motors, Nytil, Karuma power stations, Murchison National Park, Roofings, and various core prison facilities.to enhance real-world learning.
The Guest of Honour, Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs Major General (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Lt. Gen. Musanyufu Joseph. He strongly emphasized the need for continuous professional skills and career development trainings; stating that it is the “main stronghold of a steadfast security force.” He further appreciated the education partners and participants for exhibiting outstanding performance, commitment, teamwork, resilience, and discipline. He implored the graduates to serve the country with diligence and use the acquired knowledge to achieve UPS’s strategic goals, promote patriotism, and offer excellent service delivery.
The event was graced by top management officials from the Uganda Prisons Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, UPDF, Directorate of Public Prosecution, media, guests and education partners
