UMI Joins Global Efforts to drive Digital Transformation in African Education

UMI continues to advance its commitment to digital transformation and innovation in education through its partnership with the Moodle Moot Africa Conference 2025. The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in collaboration with UMI and other MoodleMoot Africa Association member universities, hosted the 3rd Moodle Moot Africa Conference 2025 from 8th to 10th October 2025 at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. The conference ran under the theme “Leveraging the Power of Disruptive Technologies for Africa’s Educational Transformation.”

The event provided a vibrant platform for dialogue on the alignment of education systems across Africa through e-learning and digital innovations. Discussions centred on how institutions can embrace disruptive technologies — such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced connectivity, and digital learning tools — to meet the demands of the 21st-century economy and Africa’s continental development goals.

The conference attracted more than 400 delegates from 24 countries, including university leaders, policymakers, and technology experts. Participants explored strategies to strengthen collaboration in open and distance learning, digital education, and the adoption of innovative technologies that enhance teaching and learning experiences across the continent. Speaking during the event, representatives emphasized that the future of African education lies in strategic digital transformation, leveraging tools that promote accessibility, flexibility, and quality in higher education delivery.

As a member of the MoodleMoot Africa Association, UMI continues to integrate technology-driven learning approaches into its training and research programs. The Institute uses Moodle, a dynamic open-source learning management system (LMS), to deliver distance and blended learning. Moodle enables educators to design, manage, and share interactive learning materials while fostering collaboration between learners and instructors. Through this partnership, UMI reaffirms its commitment to driving digital innovation in education, strengthening institutional capacity, and preparing learners to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world.
