Doctor of Philosophy in Management and Administration

Introduction

With the world’s increasingly complex problems and resource limitations, there is dire need for scholars who are qualified both to train the next generation of professionals for the public service and to expand society’s store of knowledge about management and administration. Society therefore needs critical minds trained at advanced level with skills and competencies in creating new knowledge and in analysing the environment in which management and administration take place. This PhD is awarded for original contribution to the field of Management and Administration which is reviewed in terms of theoretical, methodological, evidence, knowledge, practical-knowledge, empirical, population gaps, and ultimately significantly add to the existing body of knowledge in the subject domain. The PhD is designed to train participants such teachers, researchers as well as practitioners with broad knowledge, competencies and skills in management and administration. The PhD programme shall be conducted in three modes that is PhD by Course Work and Research, PhD by Research Only and PhD by Publications. The participants will complete the degree requirements in three (3) years as a minimum and seven (7) years as a maximum.

Admissions Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university in a related field, with sufficiently high grades and proven research ability.
  • Passing of a pre-entry examination
  • Four peer‐reviewed journal articles, chapters and or one book from reputable publishers following particular thematic area of study published within a period of five years. When jointly authored, the candidate shall be the principal author. (For only PhD by Research and Publications)
  • Applications should include the following documents
  • Two passport size Photographs
  • Copy of the National Identity Card
  • Clear copy of passport and or any other valid identification
  • English language skill certificates or demonstration that one has had all prior education in English
  • Officially certified copies of academic transcripts (Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate). Certified English translation of transcripts, if printed in another language other than English should be provided.
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • A statement of purpose (maximum 1000 words)
  • Two letters of reference (one preferably academic) printed on letter head and signed.
  • Passing of a pre-entry examination

Program Details

The specializations in this Option include; Public Administration, Public Procurement, Business Administration and Educational Management & Administration. The details are sectored into:

  1. Year 1 Semester 1: Five (5) Basic Modules to be offered by all PhD participants.
  2. Year 1 Semester 2: Four (4) Core Modules per specializations and 1 Research Seminar.
  3. Year 2 Semester 1: Four (4) Elective Modules from the choice given and 1 Research Seminar.
  4. Year 2 Semester 2 – Year 3 Semester 3: Field work and Thesis Writing
