Welcome to the Library and Documentation Centre

The UMI Library and Documentation Services (LDS) has a wealth of information materials and personnel resources to help users meet their training, consultancy and research needs. To be able to use our resources effectively, the library staff would be delighted to help you through this guide and the orientation tours. The overall objective of the LDD is to collect, organize, store and disseminate latest information materials to users in order to uphold the training, consultancy and research services of UMI.
Over 25,000+ volumes of books and 25 hardcopy journals subscribed, in addition to newspapers. Some e-journal databases & others are also subscribed jointly with the Consortium of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL). A collection of CD-ROMs are also available. The list is available at the Issue Desk on request.

Orientation:

User Orientation is conducted for all participants at the beginning of every course. It is important that every participant attend the orientation exercises for their own benefit. Please, contact the librarian for assistance when you miss this important exercise.

Membership

The three categories of membership are: (a) UMI Staff (including Associate Consultants), (b) UMI Participants, and (c) Outside Users. To become a member, all categories must formerly register with the library department. Outside users pay Ug.Shs.02,500/= one-day membership fee or Ug.Shs.10,000/= one-week membership. However, the Head Librarian has the discretion of approving membership or not, depending on the condition of the library at a given time or period.

E-Resources

Many of these databases are licensed specially for UMI Library and can be accessed while you are on different UMI campuses. Off-campus access is available to current Faculty, Participants and Staff using MyLoft.

Library Sections

  • Open Section : consists of the open shelves and reading space where users are free to access documents and which they can borrow for use outside the library.
  • Reference Section : consists of books of general nature such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks, almanacs, concordances, etc. These are strictly used inside the library except when taken out for photocopying.
  • Periodical Section: includes current & bound journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. These are strictly used within the library except when taken out for photocopying.
  • Reserve Section/ Circulation Section (Issue Desk): contains books on reserve, which are either on high demand, have very few copies, or are very expensive; hence, their circulation is restricted. They are strictly used within the library, but could only be taken out for photocopying. Test-banks (bound examination past-papers) are also kept here. This section is also the Circulation Section (Issue Desk) for the library where enquiries are handled and documents are processed for borrowing. It is out of bounds for non-divisional staff.

ARDI

The Access to Research for Development and Innovation (ARDI) program is coordinated by WIPO together with its partners in the publishing industry with the aim to increase the availability of scientific and technical information in developing countries.Currently, 17 publishers provide access to around 20,000 journals, books, and reference works for 117 developing countries and territories through ARDI.(Get logins from the Librarian)

AGORA

The AGORA program, set up by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) together with major publishers, enables developing countries to gain access to an outstanding digital library collection in the fields of food, agriculture, environmental science and related social sciences. HINARI

HINARI Programme set up by WHO together with major publishers, enables low- and middle- income countries to gain access to one of the world's largest collections of biomedical and health literature. Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE) is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with major publishers. WorldWideScience.org: provides one-stop searching of national and international scientific databases and portals. This enables anyone with internet access to launch a single-query search of 32 national scientific databases and portals from 52 countries. Users can search more than 200 million pages of science and technology information not typically accessible through popular search engines. Some of the resources that you will come cross searching via WorldWideScience include DOAJ and all the Journals Online projects (JOLs).
